The features that matter most in a new garage are a door big enough for your vehicle, enough power, light and air, and room to store things off the floor. Here is what to plan, with HomeGuide's national figures.
Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide, not a quote from us. HomeGuide publishes no garage price for Santa Rosa or for California, so we do not claim one. Clay soil, slope, fire zone rules, seismic bracing and access all move the price of a garage here. Figures read on HomeGuide in October 2026.
What size garage door do I need for a truck?
A single door is commonly 8 or 9 feet wide and a double 16 feet wide, at 7 feet tall. For a full-size pickup, a lifted truck or a van, go 8 feet tall, and plan the garage at least 22 to 24 feet deep. HomeGuide's garage door installation page lists a single door at $700 to $2,700 installed and a double at $1,000 to $3,500. An opener runs $300 to $900 installed, by HomeGuide's opener page.
Should I insulate my garage, and what R-value?
Insulate if you will use the garage as a workshop, a gym or future living space, or if it sits under a room. A garage that is only parking can be left bare. The California energy code sets R-values for conditioned space, so a garage converted to a room must meet it. HomeGuide's garage insulation page lists $0.50 to $3.00 per square foot, or $800 to $5,100 for walls and ceiling of a 2-car garage. HomeGuide's insulated garage door page puts an insulated 2-car door at $1,500 to $3,700 or more installed. HomeGuide gives no price by R-value.
How much does it cost to add an EV charger in a new garage?
A Level 2 charger with installation costs $1,200 to $3,000 by HomeGuide's EV charger page, with labor $750 to $2,000. In a new garage, the cheapest way is to run the circuit and conduit while the walls are open. HomeGuide publishes no separate figure for a charger in a garage versus outdoors. Size the panel or subpanel with the charger in mind.
How much power does a workshop garage need? Do I need a subpanel?
A detached workshop garage usually needs its own subpanel fed from the house panel, so tools and lights do not trip the main circuits. HomeGuide's run electric to garage page lists a subpanel at $500 to $1,700 and new garage wiring at $4 to $9 per square foot. Its subpanel page puts a 100 to 125 amp subpanel at $500 to $1,500. Plan 240-volt circuits for a welder, compressor or EV charger. An electrician sizes the feed after checking your house panel.
Can I heat and cool a garage with a mini split?
Yes. A mini split heat pump heats in winter and cools in summer, which suits a Santa Rosa garage used as a shop or a room. HomeGuide's garage conversion page lists a one-zone mini split at $2,500 to $6,000. Its garage heater page lists heaters at $400 to $2,000 installed. Insulate first, or the system will work hard and cost more to run.
Should a garage have windows and a side door?
Yes, in most cases. Windows bring in daylight and air, and a side door lets you in without opening the big door. HomeGuide's detached garage page lists windows at $450 to $1,500 and an exterior door at $300 to $1,000 for a 2-car garage. In fire hazard zones, windows must meet the wildfire rules, which often means tempered glass.
How should I plan storage, a loft or a car lift?
Plan storage before framing. Wall-hung shelves and ceiling racks keep the floor clear; a loft needs stronger ceiling joists and a ladder or stairs; a car lift needs a taller ceiling and a slab that can take its anchors. HomeGuide lists a car lift at $2,500 to $5,500. Its outbuilding page says a second story or loft for storage adds $10,000 to $30,000.
Should I drywall the inside of a garage?
Drywall makes a garage cleaner and brighter, and on the wall shared with an attached house the code requires fire-rated drywall. HomeGuide's drywall a garage page lists $1,000 to $3,900 for a 2-car garage.
